New Maggie’s centre in Liverpool breaks ground thanks to £5 million from the Steve Morgan Foundation

Completely commissioned, designed and funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation, the Maggie’s centre is now a huge step closer to supporting people with cancer, as well as their family and friends, from across Merseyside.
A new cancer support centre in Liverpool officially broke ground on 16th July 2026 thanks to £5 million from the Steve Morgan Foundation.
The centre, which is expected to open next year within the Knowledge Quarter Liverpool innovation district, will be Maggie’s 28th centre the UK.
It will be the second Maggie’s centre in Merseyside; after Maggie’s Wirral, also funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation, opened in the grounds of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Wirral in September 2021.
In 2025, the centre supported more than 22,000 visits* from people impacted by cancer.
The Steve Morgan Foundation also commissioned, designed and funded the Maggie’s centre in North Wales, which opened in September 2025.
As Maggie’s mark 30 years of transformative cancer support across the UK in 2026, the Steve Morgan Foundation is celebrating 25 years of changing lives for good.
Maggie's in Liverpool
Lord Mayor of Liverpool William Shortall, and High Sheriff of Merseyside Hazel Snell, were also in attendance at the site where a time capsule containing meaningful items from Maggie’s and the Steve Morgan Foundation is also due to be buried.
Maggie’s in Liverpool is being built at the junction of Daulby Street and Prescot Street, close to the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which opened in 2022, and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool, which opened in June 2020.
It was the first project to be approved for development on the site of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital, with future development opportunities on the healthcare campus currently being explored by NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group.
“The joy of living”
Dame Laura Lee DBE, Chief Executive of Maggie’s, was in Liverpool with Steve Morgan for the groundbreaking. She said:
“It is wonderful to officially start work on our centre in Liverpool today thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Steve Morgan Foundation and their commitment to commissioning, designing, building and funding three centres in the northwest of the UK.
“It is a truly phenomenal act of philanthropy which will ensure thousands of people are supported and find ways of experiencing the joy of living despite a daunting cancer diagnosis.
“To be able to celebrate today’s groundbreaking as part of Maggie’s 30th year of providing expert cancer support across the UK, and Steve Morgan Foundation’s 25th anniversary, is also very special.
“We are greatly looking forward to working closely once again with the Steve Morgan Foundation, and the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Liverpool hospital to ensure the people of Merseyside living with cancer have the support they need at what is possibly the hardest time of their lives.”
A significant partnership
The Steve Morgan Foundation has worked with HB Architects to design the Maggie’s centre in Liverpool, which will provide free practical, psychological and emotional support for people with cancer, as well as their family and friends, from across the whole of Merseyside.

Support for the people of Liverpool
Leanne Cooper, Executive Managing Director of The Royal Liverpool and Liverpool Women's University Hospital, said:
“As part of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital demolition process, we have been working closely with partners to develop a masterplan that will have the health and wellbeing of our patients and local communities at its heart.
“We are delighted to be welcoming Maggie’s as the first new partner onto the site of the old Royal.
"The services they offer to support people with cancer will be hugely beneficial to the people of Liverpool.”
Making Maggie's more accessible
Joan Spencer, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“Cancer affects people in many different ways. Psychological, emotional and practical support is vitally important, alongside expert, compassionate cancer care and treatment.
"We have worked closely with Maggie’s Wirral for many years now and know how valued they are by our patients and all those affected by cancer.
"The new Maggie’s in Liverpool will make these services much more accessible to people in North Merseyside and neighbouring areas, and we look forward to it opening.”
“A place where cancer didn't define us”
Rachael, who has been supported by Maggie’s in Wirral, spoke at the groundbreaking event.
Her husband, Chris, was diagnosed with incurable high grade brain cancer in December 2023. Chris died in September 2025.
The mum-of-three said:
“Maggie's gave my husband and our family so much more than support; it gave us a place where cancer didn't define us.
"Maggie’s gave us moments of laughter in the darkest chapter of our lives, and now, as I navigate grief, Maggie's continues to be there for me and my children.
"I honestly can't imagine our journey without Maggie's.”
Bringing this new centre to life
Wynne Construction are building the centre. 2026 marks their centenary.
